[male narrator] before his injury, john bennett was a career soldier. while serving in iraq, he was shot by a sniper. i stepped out, turned back towards the humvee and as soon as i did, i got hit. [sound of gun shot] it shattered two vertebrae and fractured another one. i ended up losing my right kidney, my spleen, my colon and half my pancreas. [dena bennett] paralyzed veterans of america got us our benefits. [nso michael killen] i helped them fill out the forms. i hand carried the forms over to the v-a and walked them through the system. you re. you re just trying to survive and they help you. they help you along the way. [nso michael killen] it s very nice to see when your work pays off and you are very successful in it, because you can see the change in that veteran.
