The Democratic Club of Smith County, in collaboration with the Smith County Democratic Party, has announced an upcoming public candidate forum scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 13.

TYLER, Texas One year ago, George Floyd s murder sparked a global reckoning over racism and calls to end police brutality. Mapping Police Violence reports 181 black people have been killed by police since George Floyd was murdered on May 25, 2020.
“Where are we a year later? 181 may not be a phenomenal number, but that s a lot of lives. So we still have work to do,” community activist and organizer Dr. Pamela Phoenix said.
There were people coming and going as the organization protested for a couple of hours in the early afternoon with the largest crowd at one point being 15.
Larna LaCroix, Precinct 77 chair for the club, said while she knows their actions today most likely will have no impact on Cruz or Gohmert, they felt it was still important to make their voices heard and to let others know they aren t alone. Accountability with the community is where it s going to start, LaCroix said. Then we can vote him [Gohmert] out.
This isn t the first time the democratic club has been upset by the actions of the elected officials, but the protest comes about six months after the one last summer that turned violent.

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Smith County Democratic Chairman Michael Tolbert said he does not intend to resign, despite demands from members of the Smith County Democratic Party.
A a resolution was formally submitted at Tuesday nightâs meeting of the partyâs County Executive Committee (CEC), demanding Tolbert resign as the chair of the local democratic party. The CEC is made up of elected and appointed precinct chairs. The committee has 47 precinct chairs, as required by Texas Election Code. 24 members signed the letter along with 9 general members at-large in Smith County, according to Pct. 19 chair Dave Hansen.

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - The Texas African American Museum in Tyler celebrated Martin Luther King Junior Day with the grand opening of its new location.
The museum is now in a vacant fire station the city of Tyler donated last fall.
Dr. Orenthia Mason was the keynote speaker at today’s event. She said she believes we’ve come a long way since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech, but there is still work to be done.
