SpaceX launched four astronauts into space Friday morning, marking its third launch with people onboard and the first time the Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon spacecraft have been reused for a crewed launch.
NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center at 4:49 a.m. CDT. NASA has selected four new flight directors to oversee operations of the International Space Station, the agency announced.
These individuals join an elite group of 101 people who have worked in Houston s Mission Control Center leading flight controllers, engineers and other professionals at NASA and its international partners.
“Our flight directors are at the forefront of everything that humans do in space,” NASA Flight Operations Director Steve Koerner said in a Monday news release. “We place a huge responsibility upon them individually to take any necessary action to ensure the safety of our astronauts, the safety of the spacecraft, and to accomplish the mission.
