Delta Sigma Phi launches new fraternity on the Gainesville Campus
Thirteen UNG students were initiated into the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity in spring 2021 in the Robinson Ballroom inside the Student Center on the Gainesville Campus. Delta Sigma Phi, known as Delta Sigs, is the second Greek-lettered fraternal organization to call the Gainesville Campus home.
Establishing a new fraternity on any college campus is no easy task. Launching a brand-new organization during the COVID-19 pandemic presents even more challenges.
The Delta Sigma Phi fraternity overcame those obstacles to establish the first North American Interfraternity Conference (IFC) group on the University of North Georgia s (UNG) Gainesville Campus. Two critical points need to be made regarding last month’s article in The San Diego Union-Tribune on troubles within the Greek system at San Diego State University.
First, the focus needs to be on the real problem, which is substance abuse, primarily of alcohol. This issue is societal in scope, not limited to SDSU or fraternities. Yes, students interested in the party scene will naturally be attracted to Greek life, but they won’t necessarily commit themselves to the overall fraternity or sorority culture once they discover what’s really involved. ....
