On April 5 I attended the rally in front of Middle River Regional Jail along with many other Valley residents in opposition to the proposed jail expansion. I was in no way prepared to hear about the harrowing tales described by current and former inmates of that institution. There were audible gasps among the rally goers upon hearing that inmates were being served not just poor quality but spoiled food, left in cells for days naked, in freezing temperatures, and beaten and denied basic medical care, just to name a few.
What in the world is wrong with our elected officials that they (1) either are unaware of these conditions (which is inexcusable, because it is their job to stay informed and to monitor the facilities in their districts) or (2) simply look the other way as their constituents are being treated in such a deplorable fashion? A society is judged by how they treat the most vulnerable citizens and by these examples I would say we should be judged to ....
