Give a Voice to the Victims of Police Brutality

Goal: Give a voice to the voiceless by eliminating the “immunity defense” for police officers accused of brutality.
Far too often, policemen and women have walked away from accusations of brutality, harassment, and racism by enacting the “immunity defense” or “qualified immunity.” This legal loophole prevents officers from being held personally liable for an action that does not violate a “clearly established” law. This technicality and specific language have allowed dozens of officers to walk free in the wake of serious accusations of wrongdoing.
This may soon come to an end, however, in Maryland. The Maryland state government is proposing legislation that would eliminate the “immunity defense” and make it easier for victims of police brutality to file civil suits against their abusers. If officers are found liable in these civil suits, they can be decertified and lose their pen ....

Md. lawmakers make moves toward ensuring voting rights for incarcerated people

MARYLAND – Local lawmakers and voting rights activists are working to make sure that Maryland’s formerly and currently incarcerated individuals can make their votes count. “Our elections should not leave any voter behind. Yet, we’re having to introduce this bill because there is a particular population of eligible and incarcerated individuals that are shut out of voting,” said Delegate Jheanelle Wilkins.
The Value My Vote Act has bipartisan support in Maryland’s House and Senate. It would require the State Board of Elections to provide information about eligible inmates’ rights as voters. It would also require election information and resources to be provided to inmates during election years. Bill advocates say during the 2020 general election, it was near impossible to ensure that incarcerated people who still had their right to vote could exercise that right. “We need to know how many of these individuals actually received these ....
