A local group wants to remember five victims of lynching in Anderson County. These are their stories.

A group of Anderson County residents is working with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) to remember victims of lynchings in the area. 
The five people identified through the project are Edward Sullivan, Elbert Harris, John Laddison, Reuben Elrod and Willis Jackson, according to organizer Stuart Sprague.
We would like to memorialize these men who were unjustly taken out, whipped, beaten, hanged, shot with bullets and, in every case, no one was ever held accountable, Sprague said. ....

Elbert Harris was in police custody in Iva on May 20, 1898, when a group of 20 white men seized him.
He had been arrested and charged with arson, according to an Anderson Intelligencer report.
They beat and whipped him, and Harris died four days later at the Anderson County jail.
The Lancaster News reported Harris was around 18 years old.

Constable CAW McCullough, who was in charge of transporting Harris from Iva to the county jail, told a jury that a party of about 20 men took Harris from him, according to a May 28, 1898, Lancaster News article. ....
