Mountaire Settles Environmental Suit in Delaware

Send Mountaire Corp., the poultry producer that is headquartered in Little Rock but has most of its operations on the East Coast, last month settled an environmental lawsuit in Delaware for $65 million and agreed to other improvements in its process. “While Mountaire does not believe that it caused any damage to any of the plaintiffs, it chose to settle the case in order to achieve a final resolution and to allow construction of a new wastewater treatment plant to proceed,” the company said in a written statement. “As part of the agreement, Mountaire has agreed to create a fund to be used for payments to those in the Millsboro vicinity claiming damages as a result of Mountaire’s wastewater treatment practices. The settlement resolves all outstanding class action claims for injuries, damages, or nuisance.”

Delaware recognizes Air Quality Awareness Week

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control is joining national organizations to recognize Air Quality Awareness Week on May 3 to 7. The national theme for 2021 is “Healthy Air — Important for Everyone!” The DNREC Division of Air Quality, which monitors and regulates the emissions to the air, encourages residents to learn more about the important role of air quality for the health of people and the Earth. Delawareans can consult the Air Quality Index (AQI) to learn about current local conditions. Created under the Clean Air Act, the online resource from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) monitors and reports on air quality each day.

DNREC opens new Killens Pond State Park boardwalk

To celebrate Earth Day, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control cut the ribbon on its new Killens Pond State Park pedestrian boardwalk. The boardwalk is intended to provide a safer trail connection along the eastern edge of Killens Pond, more appealing views while walking along the pond and new fishing opportunities. Gov. John Carney and DNREC Secretary Shawn M. Garvin hosted a small group to celebrate the grand opening of the boardwalk. The event is viewable on the Delaware State Parks YouTube page. Officials noted that, previously, pedestrians and bicyclists attempting to navigate around the east end of pondside trail had to use the narrow shoulder of Killens Pond Road, which often has fast-traveling vehicles and was unsafe for those attempting to navigate the shoulder to the other side of the pond. It also provides a safer connection for campers to visit the Nature Center, they said.
