Meat plant workers who were injured and displaced after a fatal accident in the US last month are alleged to have been intimidated and offered limited medical care.
A liquid nitrogen leak at a Foundation Food Group poultry plant in Gainesville, Georgia, killed six people in January and hospitalised at least 11 others.
A coalition of organisers, attorneys and community members claims that, since the fatal incident, workers have been discriminated against and intimidated by the company while attempting to file compensation claims and obtain medical care. ....

After Chemical Leak At North Georgia Plant, Immigrant Rights Groups Call For More Worker Protections

Immigrant rights groups in Georgia are calling for stronger worker protections after a nitrogen leak at a poultry plant in North Georgia killed six people and injured about a dozen others.
The plant has had several workplace violations over the past several years, according to records from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The latest includes two amputations in 2017.
“At the same facility, there was a lack of goggles,” says Shelly Anand, executive director of Sur Legal Collaborative. The organization advocates for immigrant workers’ rights in Georgia.
Maria del Rosario Palacios heads the advocacy organization GA Familias Unidas. She worked in meat-processing plants right after high school. She says there’s intimidation around reporting violations at these facilities and recalls a time she slipped in a plant. ....

Investigators Seek Cause of Nitrogen Leak that Killed 6 at Georgia Poultry Plant

The investigation into a deadly liquid nitrogen leak at a Georgia poultry plant continued Saturday with authorities saying they were trying to determine what caused a break in the recently installed system.
Six workers died on Thursday after the liquid nitrogen release at Foundation Food Group. About a dozen others were injured and taken to a hospital, and 130 people had to be evacuated. The search for answers came as several hundred people attended a Saturday afternoon vigil outside the plant, several sobbing for loved ones who died. ....
