For all the lizards, the loquats and the lantana, Menorca’s newest art gallery, which lies amid the blue waters and lolling yachts of Mahón harbour, carries the faintest whiff of a corner of Somerset.
Illa del Rei, a 40,000-sq-metre island a short boat ride from the Menorcan capital, Mahón, has a long and unique history. As well as being the site of a sixth-century Christian basilica and a staging post for Alfonso III’s conquest of Menorca 700 years later, the island is home to a decommissioned naval hospital founded by the Royal Navy in 1711 when Menorca was in British hands. ....

Traditional healers are preserving their knowledge, and with it, the biodiversity of Brazil’s savanna

The Brazilian savanna contains almost a third of Brazil’s biodiversity but less than 10% is officially protected and its native vegetation is threatened by a rapidly-advancing agricultural frontier.
Much of the flora and fauna remain unknown to conventional science.
A network of traditional healers is at the forefront of finding ways to protect, sustainably manage, and document the biodiversity based on their in-depth knowledge of medicinal plants.
Experts say that finding ways to value the savanna more, such as through recognizing its immense botanical and pharmacological value, could aid in its conservation. ....

Allison Reid, a senior from Canton, is majoring in criminal justice, international affairs and sociology with a minor in Portuguese. An internship at the Canton Police Department inspired her studies in international affairs and criminal justice. “My sophomore year, I became very interested in the sociological aspects of criminal justice, so I added the third major to my degree,” she said.(Photo by Dorothy Kozlowski/UGA)
During her time at the University of Georgia, Allison Reid has lived on three continents in five different cities. A senior from Canton, Reid was “determined to take advantage of everything the university had to offer me.” She studied in the United Kingdom and twice went to Brazil. She’s even interned at the U.S. State Department. Through it all, she’s learned not be afraid of change.  “Almost all change is good change,” she said. ....
