Water bills would help fix subsidence damage: A package of water bills passed Congress this week that could offer hundreds of millions to improve San Joaquin Valley water deliveries. Folded into the same bill that will be offering COVID relief was the government s annual spending bill that included  funding approval for key local canals and dams. Significantly it includes $206 million to rebuild 33 miles of the Friant Kern Canal and monies for the repair of the westside s California Aqueduct and Delta Mendota Canal — all facing reduced capacity due to subsidence- the sinking of land caused by vigorous water pumping nearby over the years. ....

New spending bill has provisions for Western water projects

Tuesday: The Senate has passed the $1.4 trillion spending package, which includes provisions for the specific water projects listed in this story. The Water Resources Development Act of 2020 has yet to face a Senate vote. 
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congress this week passed a $1.4 trillion spending package to fund the government through next September and $900 billion in COVID-19 relief.
As part of the package, Congress also passed a multi-billion-dollar bill funding Western U.S. water projects called the Water Resources Development Act of 2020, or WRDA.
“Hats off to Senate and House leaders, water committees and committee staff to put this bipartisan water package together. Overall — this is a very nice, early Christmas present to Western water users,” Dan Keppen, executive director of Family Farm Alliance, a group that advocates for irrigation and water supplies for Western farmers, said in a statement. ....
