Arts Program Allows Pelican Bay Inmates To Show Their Creative Side To Del Norte County

COVID-19 may have halted visitation at Pelican Bay State Prison, but instructors with the Arts In Corrections Program are still able to reach their students.
Six months after classes transitioned to paper correspondence, 13 students will give Del Norters a glimpse of their creative side. Hosted by the Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness, Art From the Inside will consist of 22 framed pieces and will be on display at the Del Norte County Courthouse from Jan. 14 through March 3. ....

State Offers COVID-19 Relief Dollars To Small Businesses; Grant Application Process Starts Tomorrow
Local businesses struggling through the COVID-19 pandemic may find relief through a new state-funded grant program.
Businesses, including 501©(3) and 501(c)(6) nonprofits, earning between $1,000 and $100,000 in annual revenue may be eligible for $5,000 in California Small Business COVID-19 Relief Grant program dollars. Those earning more than $100,000 up to $1 million can apply for $25,000 in grant dollars, Holly Wendt, Crescent City s recreation director who spearheads the Economic Resiliency Branch for the Del Norte Emergency Operations Center.
The application process for the first round of grant funding begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday and closes Jan. 8, Wendt said. A plethora of webinars are available at 11 a.m. daily on the program’s web page to help business owners through the application process. ....

New Beachfront Park Master Plan Seeks To Honor Del Norte s Natural Beauty, Cultural Diversity and Recreational Opportunities

Hoping to obtain up to $8.4 million in Proposition 68 dollars, Crescent City staff unveiled a new Beachfront Park masterplan that honors the region’s cultural diversity, natural beauty and recreational opportunities.
Staff, along with consultant Cathy Garrett, of Bay Area landscape architect firm PGAdesign, presented a park cobbled together from ideas Del Norters offered last year. Their goal is to create a park that appeals not only to Crescent City’s townsfolk but also visitors from across the state and country, Garrett said Monday. ....

Assemblyman Wood Discusses COVID-19, Broadband Access With Del Norte County Supervisors
Del Norte’s representative in the state assembly made a digital appearance in front of county supervisors Tuesday, discussing COVID-19, wildfire prevention, healthcare and broadband access in Northern California.
District 2 Assemblyman Jim Wood expressed his appreciation for Del Norte County Public Health Officer Dr. Warren Rehwaldt as well as Lori Cowan and Roger Gitlin who attended their final meeting as county supervisor on Tuesday.
Wood also spoke with county supervisors after introducing two bills: AB 9, which seeks to expand state wildfire prevention efforts; and AB 41, which modifies the state’s “Dig Once” policy and seeks to “expedite the deployment of broadband infrastructure.” ....
