Del Norte emergency officials got ahead of wildfire season, sending alerts to roughly 28,000 accounts Tuesday reminding residents to have a “go bag,” plan for evacuation and create a defensible space around their homes.
The test of the Community Alert System a.k.a “Everbridge” didn’t leave Hmong and Spanish speakers out thanks to Crescent City Police officers Yeng Lo and Magnolia Valero, according to CCPD Chief Richard Griffin. ....

Caltrans Continues To Clear Rocks, Soil, Debris From U.S. 101 Near Last Chance Grade, Hopes To Bring In Special Equipment To Stabilize Slope

Though the road reopened at about 10 a.m. Monday, Caltrans crews continue to work to get debris off the hillside above Last Chance Grade.
The department closed the road at about 6 p.m. so they could bring in special equipment to stabilize the area and reopen the road. Yet despite the amount of debris falling onto the highway, including quarter-ton rocks, U.S. 101 itself is undamaged, said Caltrans project manager Sebastian Cohen. ....

Caltrans officials are “working every truck in town” to remove 12,000 cubic yards of debris off U.S. 101 in the Last Chance Grade area, Del Norte Emergency Services Manager Kymmie Scott reported Saturday.
The department hopes to reopen the highway south of Crescent City by 8 p.m., said Scott, who met with state and local officials earlier Saturday afternoon, but can’t make any promises. ....

Updated Tsunami Maps Show New Hazards, Will Be Released On 10-Year Remembrance Of Japan Earthquake

Though there isn’t a dramatic change for Del Norte County, new tsunami hazard maps show several areas that are more vulnerable than initially thought.
Introduced to the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, the new maps take into account better science and modeling as well as lessons learned from the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
“Instead of being a 500-year return map it’s been updated to a 1,000-year return map so we don’t get blindsided like what happened in Japan,” said Del Norte Emergency Services Manager Kymmie Scott, chair of the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group. “(The hazard) didn’t change drastically, but there are some areas going up the 101 in town where it goes ....
