Egyptian Theatre to screen 'Back to the Future'

The Egyptian Theater, 135 N. Second St., is holding a fundraiser to replace the current seats at the theater, which are over 80 years old. The current seats have old and malfunctioning mechanics to go along with a less than ideal comfort level for patrons.
DeKALB – The Egyptian Theatre will be hosting a “Save the Clock” fundraising event for the DeKalb Rotary Club at 7 p.m. May 15. The event, which features a showing of “Back to the Future” to help the DeKalb Rotary Club restore the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Clock that is located downtown.
The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. 2nd Street, works with many service and nonprofit organizations throughout the year. The event this Saturday will include a showing of “Back to the Future,” a costume contest, trivia contest and 50/50 drawing. The film “Back to the Future” was selected by the DeKalb Rotary Club.  ....

Grow Mobil event coming to DeKalb Community Gardens

DeKALB – The DeKalb Community Gardens will have their Grow Mobile Event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 830 N Annie Glidden Rd, to give free boxes of food to those that need it.
Grow Mobile is a program administered by DeKalb Community Gardens to bring fresh food into the food deserts of DeKalb County, according to the DeKalb Community Gardens website.
The Grow Mobile events have been taking place multiple times per week and across various areas since 2016, said Jackie BiNatale, Communications Director for DeKalb Community Gardens.
Due to the colder weather and current lack of fresh produce, DeKalb Community Gardens has partnered with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to get non-perishable products to those that need them, BiNatale said. When the growing season for produce begins, more fresh produce will be available. ....

Food insecurity continues to affect students

At times, many DeKalb residents, particularly NIU students, are unsure how they will get their next meal. Even though food insecurity is a term that many are not familiar with, many do fall into that category without knowing they do, said Courtney Gallaher, Associate Professor in the Department of Geographic and Atmospheric Sciences. 
According to the January 20, 2021 Northern Star Twitter poll, only 27% of the 22 respondents indicated that they “know how food insecurity affects members of the DeKalb community and college students in general.” That means 73% do not know how it affects them. Very likely, unfamiliarity with the term “food insecurity” is to blame. ....

COVID-19 Response Grant application open until Feb. 26

The DeKalb County Community Foundation is taking applications for round four of COVID-19 Response Grants until Feb. 26 to support nonprofit and public sector service organizations. 
“The DeKalb County COVID-19 Response Fund exists to expedite charitable resources to nonprofit and community organizations responding to COVID-19 related needs throughout DeKalb County,” according to the DeKalb County Community Foundation website. “Resources are granted where they are needed most, with an initial focus on the basic needs of those most significantly impacted by this crisis.”
The grants help with recovery efforts for the non-profits that were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizations that received a grant during phase three include Children’s Home & Aid, Equine Dreams and Opportunity House, Inc.   ....

Tri Kappa emphasizes importance of mammograms


AUBURN — As residents ring in 2021, Auburn Tri Kappa is reminding DeKalb County residents to schedule their mammograms for the year and continue breast self-awareness.
According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. With busy schedules, women often neglect having their yearly breast cancer screening as recommended by the American Cancer Society. Breast cancer diagnosed in the early stages has a 98% cure rate. However, breast cancer remains the second-highest cause of cancer death among women.
The mission of Auburn Tri Kappa Pink Out is a call to action and education of community members about the crucial importance of early detection. Auburn Tri Kappa has established a financial aid fund available to DeKalb County residents in need of assistance with the cost of screenings, diagnostic testing, or treatment of breast cancer.
