Mayfield Tornado Oral History Project commemorates loss, celebrates resilience of Western Kentucky community

On the evening of Dec. 10, 2021, a catastrophic EF4 tornado churned through Tennessee and Western Kentucky, carving a 165-mile path across 11 counties and claiming the lives of 74 people. Damage concentrated in Mayfield, Kentucky, where more than 4,000 structures were impacted. A candle factory was flattened, killing nine workers, and many historic downtown buildings were destroyed, including the Graves County courthouse and eight historic churches, among which were two Black churches built shortly after the Civil War. 

Prize-winning author, historian Jill Lepore to speak at UK Libraries Earle C. Clements Lecture-Symposium

Drawing from her book, "The Deadline: Essays," Lepore will reflect on the relationship between America's past and its fractious present, exploring such difficult questions as "Why does impeachment no longer work?" and "Why do race riot commissions never fix anything?"

UK Libraries transfers rare stereograph to Henry Clay Memorial Foundation

In commemoration of Juneteenth, UK Libraries transferred the image of Aaron Dupuy, the enslaved personal valet and coach driver for Henry Clay, to Ashland Estate officials. The stereograph will be displayed in the mansion at the Ashland Estate in Lexington.
