Donors to L.A. Mayor's Fund keep their identities secret

After Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti took office in 2013, he helped launch a charity fund that allows donors to support diverse programs from environmental initiatives to youth employment.
Since then, Garcetti has reported raising more than $60 million from corporations, foundations, and individuals for the nonprofit Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles. A Times data analysis found that at least $3.8 million of that total came from contributors who gave through accounts that mask their identity, a practice that alarms ethics watchdogs who say such donations skirt a state law intended to make those donors’ names public.
These contributors used donor-advised funds, a type of charitable giving account offered by some nonprofit foundations and for-profit investment firms that provide a generous tax deduction and, when requested, anonymity. ....

Mayor's Fund Receives Donations Totaling Over $72 Million For COVID Relief

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Mayor s Fund for Los Angeles received more than $72 million from 12,500 donations to provide direct financial assistance and services to 225,000 Angelenos in the last year of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced today, the one-year anniversary of his emergency order and the beginning of the city s shutdowns.
“We ve seen such incredible generosity. We can put a figure on that more than 12,500 donations and $72 million that you ve given to your fellow Angelenos, going directly to those most in need through the Mayor s Fund. It s been a lifeline for 255,000 people here in the city of Los Angeles, Garcetti said. ....

LOS ANGELES - Mayor Eric Garcetti Wednesday announced an initiative to promote shopping at Los Angeles small businesses this holiday season.
In partnership with L.A. Original, a program of the nonprofit Mayor s Fund for Los Angeles, the Do Something Big, Support Small initiative was created to support shopping at smaller, local businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
