How to negotiate more successfully as a woman
Glass ceilings and gender equality
In 2015, the German legislature passed a law mandating a 30% quota for women on supervisory boards of listed companies. Aiming further down the corporate ladder, this past January, the German cabinet greenlit a bill to force more gender equality on company executive boards after a voluntary system didn t bring about enough change.
If approved, the law will make it mandatory for listed companies to appoint one female board member if it has at least four members. Companies that the government has a majority stake in will be held to even tougher standards. Currently, only around 16% of DAX board members are women. ....

Violence against women rife
Lack of protection
Silvia Trujillo was born in Uruguay and grew up in Argentina, but she said she first became a feminist in Guatemala. She moved there 20 years ago and has since worked both as a sociologist and the editor of
La Cuerda, an internet portal with a feminist view on reality, according to its website.
We live here in a state that is incapable of protecting its women and where the political will to do so is lacking. This is compounded by the way society is so pervaded by machismo that violence against women is often not reported, she said. ....

Structural racism and vaccine access: The German data gap
In the UK and the US, white people are being vaccinated more quickly than others. It might well be the same in Germany ― but statistics based on ethnicity are not collected here. Is it time to close the data gap?
The US and the UK are far ahead of Germany in terms of number of vaccines administered - but data from these countries reveal deep inequalities.
Ensuring equal access to the vaccine isn’t going well ― even within the rich countries who have most of it. As of April 14,the vaccination rate for white people in the US was 1.6 times greater than that for Black people and 1.7 times higher than that for Hispanic people. A similar trend can be seen for ethnic minorities in the UK, with people identifying as Black African or Black Carribean being significantly less likely to have received a first dose of the vaccination than white people, according to a government report. Questions have arisen as to whethe ....

Conflict Zone special - Lebanon: From riches to ruin
Lebanon
Over eight months after a devastating explosion on August 4, 2020, that tore through its capital Beirut, Lebanese authorities have failed to deliver investigation outcomes to the families of over 200 people who were killed in the blast.
The official account attributed the blast to 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored for years at the port, but authorities failed to hold anyone accountable.
In its report, Amnesty International cited leaked official documents where authorities in customs, the judiciary, the military and security apparatus warned successive governments of the dangerous stockpile of chemicals at the port at least 10 times in the past six years. ....

Opinion: Why have we failed women so badly during COVID?
The COVID pandemic s effects have disproportionately hit women, says Amnesty International s sobering new report. That s largely because we ve ignored their plight, argues DW s Editor-in-Chief Manuela Kasper-Claridge.
Protests against femicide have taken place across Mexico after a number of slayings during the pandemic
The terrible face of the coronavirus pandemic comes in the form of illness, death, and despair for many people. Women are confronted by it daily, as they bear a particularly heavy burden during the crisis. Women are more affected by unemployment, have worse access to healthcare, and all too often receive little or no economic or social support. ....
