DEFENDERS of home-produced Scottish food this week expressed concern over the newly signed memorandum of understanding between the United Kingdom and agricultural powerhouse Brazil, warning that the scene was being set for the importation of beef produced through the destruction of the Amazonian rainforest and under lax scrutiny for animal welfare and growth hormone use.
While the new accord with Brazil has not grabbed the headlines in Britain, it has been widely reported in Brazil, where agriculture minister Tereza Cristina predicted that, over time, the UK would become more aligned with international rules on food safety, closer to science-based approaches . ....

MPs launch inquiry into Brexit border delays for meat exports

Exports of seafood and meat products to the EU have been disrupted since the start of the new year
MPs are launching an urgent inquiry into the disruption of UK meat exports to the EU since the end of the Brexit transition period on 1 January.
Food export businesses of all sizes have reported losing money and trade due to an increase in bureaucratic border processes.
The British Meat Processors Association (BMPA) recently warned that meat companies were seeing a serious and sustained loss of trade with the EU.
The House of Commons EFRA Committee s inquiry aims to scrutinise the government s response and see how support can be increased for exporters. ....

UK badger cull to end as Government issues no new licenses from 2022


The Government has today announced an end to badger culling - which Boris Johnson s fiancée Carrie Symonds has campaigned against for years.
No new licences will be issued for badger culling after 2022 and all existing permits will not be extended beyond 2028 at the latest, Environment Secretary George Eustice told MPs.
The contentious and divisive cull, introduced in a bid to eradicate bovine TB, has cost around £60million and seen the deaths of approximately 140,000 badgers.  
The decision will be seen as a major victory for the Prime Minister s fiancée Ms Symonds, 32, an avowed opponent of the badger cull, and conservation groups.  ....
