Mother speaks at weekly rally calling for ACI to answer how her son died

CRANSTON Standing before a line of news people, her lawyer behind her and two dozen protesters and supporters behind him, Marie Franco, the mother of the man who died a month ago in Medium Security at the Adult Correctional Institutions, begged for someone “to come forward and tell me what really happened to him.”
Holding a photo of her son and saying she had been crying for two days straight, Marie Franco said she was angry and “hurt inside.” He was cremated on her birthday, she said. And two days ago, she got the ashes. “I miss my son,” she said. “The only thing I need is answers, what really happened to my son. If someone would come forward. Please somebody, come forward. You have a mother. You all have mothers. Please, somebody, come forward and tell me what happened to my son.” ....

Corrections Director stands by COVID protocols amid outbreak at the prison

CRANSTON The state Department of Corrections is defending its COVID protocols in response to a push by current and newly elected state lawmakers urging officials to take immediate steps to reduce the prison population.
Corrections Director Patricia Coyne-Fague on Friday responded by email to an appeal by 20 current and prospective legislators. She emphasized that the Adult Correctional Institutions is now at 53% capacity and had kept its COVID cases well in check until a recent surge.
More than 500 inmates and upwards of 120 staff have tested positive for the virus over the last month a spike she says is reflective of the ongoing spike in community spread as lawyers, clergy and new admissions come into the prisons. ....

RI lawmakers ask Governor, AG to reduce prison population in wake of COVID

So far, they have gotten no response, according to newly elected state Sen. Tiara Mack, a progressive Democrat representing District 6 in Providence,
Social distancing, frequent handwashing, the use of PPE and other CDC recommendations to prevent COVID spread are impossible in a prison setting, where many prisoners also have one or more health conditions placing them at greater risk, according to medical experts.
The group said loved ones are receiving calls and letters about immuno-compromised prisoners sharing cells with those who are COVID positive, officers refusing to wear CDC-approved masks, and other concerns.
They ask corrections officials to publicly post its quarantine process for staff and prisoners who test positive; develop a system to report information that contradicts the department s stated policies; and supply the prisoners with multiple cloth masks and supplies to clean and sanitize the masks. They call for universal testing across the population ....
