past, present and future. dickens was falling deeper and deeper into debt as he struggled to support his large family. his own childhood had been mired in poverty. when his family fell on hard times, his father was sent to debtors prison. while 12-year-old charles was sent to work ten hours a day in a shoe factory. that experience would shape his work. after delivering a pivotal speech to working families in october of 1843, he was inspired to write a christmas carol. what better way to highlight the tale of the working poor than with a stingy boss who is shown the error of his ways and makes amends to his mistreated employee? dickens worked to complete the book in time for the holidays. when it was published, a christmas carol was an instant success. there were live stage performances in london.
give people in prison doing the right thing a chance to earn time and get out earlier. and ideas like senator rand paul and i put forth in our legislation to help people when they come out of prison get jobs. people in congress are attacking practices that are considered by as torture by psychologists and human rights organizations. so trying to talk about things like bail we have debtor s prison in the united states of america. we have people that are solely in prison not having been convicted of a crime yet because they cannot afford to pay the bail or pay the fines and fees they re facing. there s a whole bunch of things that are broken. a lot of approaches to fixing it. but we need more momentum in this body to understand the urgency. i give the statistics 20% more poverty. but when it comes to job growth in our country, we re losing out on tens of billions of dollars of economic growth because of this crippled system.
part right, because you can get rid of those people and identify who did it and get rid of that person. the bigger part is the systemic part of it. the architecture of authority that is being used as an instrument of oppression because it s not about hurt feelings. this is about poor people to a large degree, many of them african-american people who are getting the short end of the stick, and this is real money. right? if you are running basically a debtor s prison if you if there are so many fines on people that they cannot pay them, and then they get they have to report to jail. that is a person who has now been taken out of the family. it s money that family cannot use. every time somebody makes the argument that there are too many people on welfare. well every time we engage in these sorts of practices, we re taking money away from actual families real money that real people need and could use. when they were talking about in that report about sales taxes going down well sales
dirty linen of that police department and the public will be brought out. they have a debtors prison in ferguson because if you can t pay those unfair fines for being stopped, you end up going to jail when they stop you and you have warrants out for your arrest. that s debtors prison. we all know the actions of the governor of missouri throughout this entire ordeal. do you think, congressman, he ll be cooperative at this point and be progressive and move forward for change? i think the governor will. i think he may have made some missteps early on but i believe that this report he s a former attorney general for the state. when this report crosses his desk, i think he s going to realize he s going to have to use the power of his office. i think jay nixon will do that. dr. dyson, what do the people do with these numbers? with this report? i think jay nixon displays
