the 880 freeway that traffic continues to do well. at 5:00 emergency crews across san mateo county converged on a quiet neighborhood just hours ago. they got there shortly after 10:00 p.m.. investigating a suspicious container. it was found outside of a home on mason drive. not far from taranova high school. pacifica firefighters were not taking any chances. hazmat teams from several cities were called in. we found a material that wasn t dangerous. possiblely a fertilizer it was neutral but it shouldn t be where it was. hazmat crews are on the scene early this morning. a full investigation is now being launched into the radio problems for oakland police but as ktvu channel 2 reporter claudine wong tells us that s not the only problem the police department system facing. good morning, claudine. reporter: good morning, pam. let s talk about the radios. they are still are problem. officers arriving here are still going to be faced with an unreliable investigation. even
anthony batts will stay in oakland for now. someone else was chosen for the san jose top cop job. anne makovec has the latest. good morning. reporter: the phrase at least for now is very important to point out because anthony batts, the police chief here in oakland, has said he is not sure about his future with the department. he has only so far served one year of a three-year contract he signed here in oakland and it was a real shocker to a lot of people a couple of weeks ago when he announced he was a finalist for the top cop job in san jose. then yesterday the statement came out that he did not get the job. san jose city managers said to have picked acting chief chris moore instead. the city council in san jose could aprove her choice as early as next week. so some people in oakland appear to be breathing a sigh of relief. here s the mayor s spokesman. i appreciate his leadership and commitment to community policing and to raising professional standards. i am optimisti
positive image of drug users. nobody consciously says, well i m going to smoke a joint and live the rest of my life under a bridge. no. so you re saying, then, there are definitely other reasons behind the obvious than you see? yes. you know, it is like a stage hand at the theater. you don t see him but they are in the back doing the operations. reporter: so those other reasons could be personal tragedy or trauma. close to 100% of women who are substance abusers have problematic substance abuse have history of childhood sexual assault. so it is kind of like you can t really separate those things, it is a copying mechanism and also people like to use heroin because they think it is fun. it comes with lots of risks so i wouldn t necessarily tell people they should try it but it is a lot more complicated than just it is bad, you have to stop. reporter: the group takes that nonjudgmental attitude to the extreme. we don t encourage people, we don t discourage people.

will oakland s top cop stay on the job? we ll tell you what oakland s mayor is saying. poor visibility may have led to 10 drivers pulling over this morning with flat tires. what happened? we ll explain. mornings on 2 starts now. good morning. i m dave clark. i m tori campbell. it s friday, january 28th. we are on the scene of developing news in danville. crews are at a major fire just east of highway 680. this fire has injured one firefighter. jade hernandez was the first reporter to arrive on the scene. jade, is the fire still going on? reporter: they have the fire contained. it s a two alarm fire. one firefighter was injured. we don t note extent of the injuries. we do know this fire started about 5:30 after someone on the freeway noticed it and called for help. part of the controlling collapsed. the fire chief told me it appears someone may have been staying here at least part-time but was not home when flames sparked this morning. it s at 923 elton tado. they beli
