Faith communities across the country reacted this week to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of trayvon martin, an unarmed black teenager. Demonstrations against the verdict were mostly peaceful. Some ministers organized vigils to press for federal civil rights charges against zimmerman. The president of the National Council of churches said people of faith should join in a renewed call for racial justice. Pilgrims take part in a series of rituals that recall events from the lives of abraham and the prophet muhammad. On friday, muslims began observing the three days of eidaladha or the festival of sacrifice. Some sacrifice animals such as sheep or cows to recall abrahams willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to god. In a major speech on poverty, vicepresident ial candidate paul ryan this week praised religious charities, while blasting federal antipoverty programs, he charged they create what he called a debilitating culture of dependency.
