On May 12, Fountain Hills Middle School fourth grade students were treated to a special presentation by Debi Novotny, a local childrenâs author, educator and literacy guru. During the program, children learned how to begin writing a book, the process of creative writing using the senses, and a bit about illustration as well. This program was part of a new initiative by the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and was partially sponsored by local business, Señor Taco. After the educational writing session, Novotny autographed and personalized copies of her book for each student, âWhere Do Hearts Grow?â A second session with Novotny is set to take place today, May 19, for the children to further explore the process of âhow a book becomes a book.â They will be introduced to brief aspects of printing, publishing, illustration and distribution. ....
A year ago, when we were learning about COVID-19, figuring out how best to deal with the pandemic and continue with our lives, things rapidly changed. The Times queried a number of residents asking what they thought was going to happen after the pandemic was over. Most of us, myself included, were of the opinion that things would be ânormalâ again soon. Things are looking a little more pre-2020 now, but there are still restrictions, warnings, pleas and hope from medical experts, politicians and just folks weighing in on the future. We followed up a few weeks ago, emailing the same list of people we contacted a year ago. Not all participants responded, but we had a good number of residents who were happy to share their thoughts. ....
