A surrendered New Jersey shelter dog found a new home and a job as a Pennsylvania police K-9 thanks to the work of local animal rescue groups.
Arrow, a young Belgian Malinois, was handed over to the Burlington County Animal Shelter in February 2020 before joining the ranks of the Lower Southampton Township Police Department, where he became the agency’s first K-9 since the 1960s.

The Burlington County Animal Shelter has a record of success in finding forever homes for the animals they love and care for, but it is not every day that one of their rescues also lands a job as a bona fide crime-fighter.

Then again Arrow is not your typical rescue dog.
The young Belgian Malinois, who was surrendered to the Burlington County Animal Shelter in February 2020 as a young puppy, made a joyful return to the shelter on Wednesday morning with his new police partner and companion, Lower Southampton Police Officer Kyle Heasley.

The duo came to thank the shelter employees who cared for the young pup and connected him with the Rescue 22 Foundation, an East Greenwich-based animal rescue group that found Arrow his home with the Bucks County police force.
‘Arrow came in as an owner surrender,’ now has new job with police department
Sometimes, life is all about finding the people who can bring out the best in you.
“Arrow came in as an owner surrender,” Debbie Bucci with Burlington County Animal Shelter said.
Arrow, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois mix, knows that lesson firsthand, and on Wednesday, he was reunited with the rescuers who gave him a second chance.
After a failed adoption, the Burlington County Animal Shelter and Rescue 22 Foundation, which trains service dogs for disabled veterans, had a better idea.
“I thought that Arrow sounded like a dog that might have some working capabilities,” Angela Conner with the Rescue 22 Foundation said.
