(Jed Carlson / jcarlson@superiortelegram.com) Outdoor enthusiasts, bird lovers and citizen scientists are being sought to take part in the St. Croix River Association’s annual bald eagle count. From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, participants are asked to report bald eagle sightings within the 7,760-square-mile St. Croix River watershed. The area stretches across states from Solon Springs, Cable and Hayward on the Wisconsin side to Moose Lake, Mora and McGrath in Minnesota. It reaches as far south as Prescott and River Falls, Wisconsin, and north to Minnesota Highway 210, encompassing familiar waterways such as the Eau Claire, Totogatic and Namekagon rivers. ....
County board learns limits of managing large-scale livestock operations Burnett County, the home of several St. Croix River tributaries, receives recommendations to regulate industrial agriculture. He’s one of only a few; the 36-square mile township is home to just 823 people. Most of the township and its residents are downwind of a proposed industrial swine facility that has put them on defense. Pahl spoke to the Burnett County board of supervisors at their recent meeting to discuss Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) that have their sights set on the county. ....
