Cape Town - The provincial government has called on the public to avoid hospital visits, unless absolutely necessary, due to the second wave of Covid-19 infections which has placed medical facilities under strain.
Over the weekend the Western Cape department of health’s Emergency Medical Services said it had responded to to a total of 6 302 incidents across the province.
EMS spokesperson Deanna Bessick said emergency services had responded to well over 141 incidents in red zone areas, and 149 transport-related incidents, as well as 7 hiking incidents in Stellenbosch, the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Newlands and Table Mountain. ....

One person has been killed in a hang gliding accident at Lion s Head, Western Cape Emergency Medical Services said on Wednesday.
EMS spokesperson Deanna Bessick said the incident occurred at 12:25 after the pilot s glider went down whilst flying.
The patient collided into Lions Head as a result. EMS paramedics and Skymed are currently at the scene. Unfortunately, the patient is deceased, she said on Wednesday afternoon.
Bessick extended condolences to the man s family. ....

Joburg woman dies while hiking on Table Mountain

Cape Town - A woman hiking on the Skeleton Gorge trail on Table Mountain died after a fall.
Shortly after 10am on Saturday, the 42-year-old woman from Johannesburg suffered the fatal injuries.
The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to assist and the woman was declared dead at the scene.
Police have confirmed they are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
Metro EMS spokesperson Deanna Bessick said: “Unfortunately, the patient was unconscious and she did not get up after the accident. The incident occurred at 10:10. When the first team of EMS responders arrived at the scene, the patient was dead upon arrival.” ....

EMS drones will deliver life-saving equipment to Western Cape patients

Cape Town - The Western Cape Health Department is expected to announce the implementation of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) drone project, that would be allowed to fly over national key points.
The drone system will deliver automated external defibrillators to the scene of cardiac arrests. In doing so, bystanders would now have the ability to initiate life-saving measures while awaiting professional medical care.
EMS spokesperson Deanna Bessick said the project began in January 2017, and that the Western Cape Health’s EMS would become the first government institution in South Africa to be allowed to fly over national key points. ....
