peaceful protest was ending. the suspects had sniper rifles and both investigators and witnesses say they re targeting police. reporter: yeah, that suspect killed by police overnight after a sniper shooting at officers here from elevated areas like this parking garage right behind me that is still blocked off boy police, as you can see. for now, dallas police say they are not giving away too much information, because this is a very active investigation. they re worried mainly about safety. much of downtown dallas remains a crime scene after a night of horrific violence aimed at police officers. in a coordinated ambush-style attack, a sniper perched in an elevated position opened fire on police. just started shooting. like all of the cops. i just saw cops bending over, man. it had to have been like five or six cops, like they was all getting shot down. reporter: it happened near overrecent police shootings. when it was over, five officers killed, seven others wounded.

[ sirens ] at least one gunman ambushed police officers just after a peaceful protest was ending in downtown dallas.
