When the subject is John Chaney, where do you start?
He just turned 87. So he deals with his share of issues, just like most people at that age. But he survives, just like he always has. “The worst thing about getting old,” he says, “is that all the people you knew die. So you have to make new friends.”
Yet he still has a presence, even though he coached his last game 13 years ago, especially among the many people whom he’s had an impact on throughout his lifetime.
“His story needs to be told, the correct way,” said Aaron McKie, who played for him a quarter-century ago and next season will succeed Fran Dunphy, the man who succeeded Chaney at Temple, to become only the fifth Owls basketball coach since 1952.
