(WFIE) - Deaconess, Evansville Housing Authority and the Vanderburgh County Health Department teamed up to hold clinics in four low-rent housing complexes on Friday. Deaconess Clinic Director Andrew Schenk said vaccine rollout has been efficient, but not everyone can make it to the usual clinics. “We’ve been open for a number of months,” he said. “There’s people who have transportation issues and a little hesitancy.” The clinics were held at Kennedy Towers, Schnute Towers, Buckner Towers and White Oak Manor. ....

(WFIE) - Researchers at Deaconess are identifying more patients with the UK variant 23 cases of the probable variant COVID-19 cases have been identified at Deaconess Hospital since January 12. Five of those cases were confirmed to be the United Kingdom variant of the disease. Variants occur when mutations happen in the virus’s genes. As the virus continues to spread, more virus is created, which increases the chances of a variant emerging. That ability to occur more frequently is why Dr. April Abbott, Director of Microbiology at Deaconess, says that it’s as important now as it’s ever been to wear masks and follow safety precautions. ....

(WFIE) - Deaconess officials are warning residents to be cautious while out the cold weather, saying the number of emergency room visits tend to rise during the winter months. This warning comes after an accident at Reitz Hill earlier this week. According to 911 records, a man went down the hill and rammed into the field goal post on the practice field. His injuries are unknown, but he was taken to Deaconess Midtown Hospital. ....

(WFIE) - On Thursday, Deaconess Health officials confirmed five cases of a new COVID-19 strain have been detected in Evansville. The new strain is being commonly referred to as the “UK variant.” Since those cases were detected, the Vanderburgh County Health Department has sprung into action with the Indiana State Department of Health to contact trace. “We haven’t found any common thread,” said Administrator Joe Gries. “As far as the individuals who might have been at the same location or anything like that, so really not anything that ties back to one person or one event.” ....
