Point of going to the edge of the bridge, going to the edge of the dock and saying, i m here and i m going to stay here and help as much as i can until somebody forces me off or the consequences of what s going on forces me off. what was explained to me on the site was because there s a lot of people there. there s a tremendous number of bodies ready to work. and they say, well, you can t have them on the pile. the pile is not stable. so they showed me the de-layering that they re doing. this is that steady state fire. you see the men and women on top. and on the other side of this. they do it in quadrants. it s a, b, c, and d. they do it as a square. on another side of the squad rant, there, i shot it wide. you have the guys on top that are listening and checking with a probe. and then in the middle, they have de-layered, as you guys called it, and they blocked it up with wooden blocks and sent in a censor and a camera or a dog. and they ve been doing that spot by spot. ....

Through. and you are adding even more wind, now. fueling some of the fires that are still established in the sub-basement levels. and the toxic fumes that are coming out of that is hampering the rescue coordination. putting water on that fire, also, causes some of the sand to be more difficult to move, at times, as well. and when they are trying to find people that, perhaps, are alive in in pockets and, what you guys call, voids. what do they actually have to do? because we have seen people picking through things with their bare hands. but then, we have also seen some sophisticated and some heavy equipment. sure. they are trying to do what s called de-layering the pile. you could see multiple floors stacked on top of each other. as you count those big pancakes, you could probably count at least nine of them. and you know that each one of them was a floor. and so, what they are trying to do is methodically reach the pile from the sides, and not so much from the tops to create more ....

For the audience. that they have a steady-stream hose on. and then, the men and women are working on top of that fire. yes. and obviously, common sense told me you don t want to work on top of a fire. they say that s the balance. how so? they are trying to risk themselves, life over limb. it s one of the terms. right now, they are trying to rescue people under there. they are willing to put themselves in harms way, to the point of going to the edge of the bridge. going to the edge of the dock and saying i am here, i am going to stay here and help as much as i can until somebody forces me off or the or the consequences of what s going on force me off. so what was explained to me on the site is because there is a lot of people there. absolutely. there is a tremendous just number of bodies ready to work. they said you can t have em on the pile. pile s not stable. so, they showed me the de-layering that they are doing. this is that steady-state fire. you see the men and wo ....

Walls. we re digging around. reporter: today, rescue crews formed bucket brigades to clear debris, delicately trying to reach search areas within the twisted metal and crumbled concrete. heavy machinery arrived, too. and just a few feet away from the rubble, we were reminded of the risks to rescuers. the building you see behind me is also in danger of potential collapse. reporter: each rescue team is also accompanied by a doctor, like trauma surgeon howard lieberman. they remove a layer at a time. so, basically, they re de- layering the pile. one layer at a time. we go in, we search, see if we can find anything. if not, they take off another layer. reporter: the mission also continues below in a water- filled underground garage. some rescuers have had to be convinced to take breaks, so dedicated to the task at hand. but given the heat and stress, some 130 firefighters and crew take turns working 15-minute shifts. this is sort of what we do. it is mentally and physically ....
