Bestbet began as a gambling facility/greyhound racing track in the 1980s at its first location on Race Track Road in northern St. Johns County. The site was vacated nearly a decade ago, even before Florida voters approved a ban on greyhound racing by constitutional amendment in 2018.
In an interview with The Record Monday, bestbet President Jamie Shelton said: The first card room to open in Northeast Florida was in St Johns County and the patrons always enjoyed the entertainment option provided.
The new facility will be built on 8-plus acres off S.R. 207. The company s other Northeast Florida locations in the Jacksonville neighborhood of Regency and Orange Park in Clay County offer poker and other card games; simulcast wagering on horse and greyhound racing; and jai alai.

As Congress debates more COVID-19 aid, Florida businesses hope for relief
Lawmakers in Congress are debating a second COVID-19 relief bill, and with that, more funds for the Paycheck Protection Program. In Florida, small businesses have exhausted money from the program and are waiting for more aid. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 70% of Florida businesses received PPP loans. The program covered eight weeks of employee payroll while lockdowns were in place. After the program was launched, it ran out of money in two weeks. It was later replenished in late April, and more businesses were able to opt-in. [Source: WLRN]

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (News Service of Florida) - The stateâs approval of a plan to open a pari-mutuel facility near St. Augustine has drawn a legal challenge from another gambling operator down Interstate 95.
Daytona Beach Kennel Club, Inc., last week filed a challenge to a decision by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation to allow the relocation of a long-existing gambling permit to the site of the planned facility in St. Johns County.
Bayard Raceways, Inc. notified the department in July that it planned to relocate the permit to open a facility at an eight-acre site along Interstate 95 southwest of St. Augustine. The permit was used in the past at a dog track in northern St. Johns County, though it had been more recently used through an arrangement with a track in neighboring Clay County.
