Judge Rules Two Freedmen Eligible for Tribal Citizenship of Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Tribe Appeals

A tribal judge for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation in Oklahoma last week ruled that two lineal descendants of Black people who were enslaved by the tribe, known as Freedmen, are eligible for tribal citizenship. As the Civil War drew closer, the tribe was split; A portion of the Nation allied with the Confederacy and the other allied with the Union.

Olo-hah-walla, the ancestor of Oklahoma Historical Society researcher Veronica Redding, is fourth from left on the second row of this Osage Council photo taken in 1895. Veronica Redding has helped many of her fellow Native Americans find photos of ancestors at the Oklahoma History Center. Imagine her delight when she stumbled across an Osage Council photo that featured her third-great-grandfather, Olo-hah-walla. Redding had seen a family copy of the photo while tracing her own roots. But not until she became a researcher at the Oklahoma Historical Society Research Center did she know it was part of the center’s collection.
