According to sources at the Kano branch of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), the closed manufacturing industries were among the hundreds existing in Sharada/Challawa and Bompai industrial areas of the state. However, their closure has been attributed to the ongoing distortions in the Nigerian economy occasioned by instability in the management of foreign exchange (forex), insecurity, poor infrastructure, poor power supply, as well as increasing taxation. Notwithstanding, it was observed that recently, the state has been recording the entry of new business brands, new international firms and new factories. This, according to some experts, are the outcome of the state government’s establishment of the Kano Investment Promotion Agency (KanInvest) which is mandated to, among other issues, encourage, promote, coordinate and support investment activities in the state. ....
Emmanuel Addeh The Minister of State, Works and Housing, Mr. Abubakar Aliyu, has said that investment in infrastructure such as roads and housing would bring prosperity to Nigerians. According to the minister, when summed up, all the ongoing works on Nigerian roads started by previous administrations, showed that President Muhammadu Buhari is keen on bridging the infrastructure gap of the nation, especially by completing abandoned projects instead of starting new ones. He said: “This government is investing massively in infrastructure development of our roads and housing sector either by direct budgetary funding or through other means, be it SUKUK, Tax Credit Initiative or the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund.” ....
The Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje on Tuesday met with all the five Emirs from Kano, Bichi, Rano, Karaye and the Gaya Emirates seeking ways to fight the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Governor Ganduje, while assuring of his government’s commitment to fighting the second wave called for support from the traditional rulers and stakeholders. He said, “Indeed COVID-19 is back and we have to also be back to fight it relentlessly. It is said that, if the going is tough only tough ones keep standing. We shall be tougher at all times, till when we put a halt to it.” ....
Daily Trust gathered at the market that despite the hike in price, certain varieties – like the brown and the milk coloured beans – are in short supply and the little available is in high demand. About 10 truckloads of beans leave the market weekly, according to sources, but the quantum now in the market is just a fraction of what was harvested last year. Even the bean chaff used for livestock feed, which was sold at N1000 now goes for between N3000 and N4000 per 100kg bag. Most of the farmers who supply beans to the market are those who fled insurgency from Borno and Adamawa states. ....
It is also on record that the market has been a source of pride to grain merchants and farmers as it gives them an opportunity to trade on a fair ground with maximum security of their lives and investments. The market was established over 46 years ago after a fire incident consumed several grain shops at the market’s initial Sabon Gari location. According to sources, it was after the fire incident that the state government in collaboration with businessmen in the market began to look for alternatives. After serious searching, the present location was sited even though many marketers refused to relocate initially. ....
