The UK medicines regulator has said the benefits of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine continue to outweigh any risks, but under-30s will be offered an alternative jab.
Meanwhile, in a separate update on its investigations on Wednesday, the European medicines watchdog has ruled that unusual blood clots were very rare side effects of the jab. Scientists have also insisted that further research is needed to understand more about the risk of these rare blood clots.
On April 8, Health Secretary Matt Hancock reiterated that the vaccines currently in use in the UK, including the newly available Moderna vaccine, remained safe . ....

Anticoagulation should not be regarded as primary cause of intracerebral haemorrhages, finds study
Cardiovascular diseases are usually complex and affect multiple organs simultaneously. Treatments for vascular diseases in the brain may therefore have implications for the treatment of cardiac diseases. It is therefore important to understand the respective causes and effects.
This study explores the causes of intracerebral haemorrhages and links them to the risk of stroke associated with atrial fibrillation. It suggests a fundamental new assessment of the effects of blood thinning on intracerebral haemorrhages.
About 1,000 patients with intracerebral haemorrhage are treated at stroke units each year in Switzerland. Intracerebral haemorrhages are more often fatal than other forms of strokes, and their incidence has not decreased in the past 30 years. An official with the European Medicines Agency said Tuesday that there is a “clear link” between the AstraZeneca vaccine and deadly blood clots in the brain.
Marco Cavaleri, the chair of the vaccine evaluation team at the EMA, told the Italian newspaper Il Messagero that in his opinion, “we can now say it is clear that there is an association (of the brain blood clots) with the vaccine.” Cavaleri added that while he was sure that there was a “clear link” with the AstraZeneca vaccine and blood clots, it is still not yet known what the actual cause of the deadly brain clots is. ....
