THE image of the Sto. Niño de Cebu and the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu were declared as national cultural treasures by the National Museum of the Philippines on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, exactly 500 years after the first Catholic baptism in the Philippines.
Under the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009, or Republic Act 10066, a national cultural treasure refers to a unique cultural property that possesses “outstanding historical, cultural, artistic and/or scientific value which is highly significant and important to the country and nation.”
The same law provides that national cultural treasures are entitled to receive the following: priority government funding for protection, conservation and restoration; incentive for private support of conservation and restoration; an official heritage marker; and priority protection by the government in times of armed conflict, natural disaste ....

Apostolic Nuncio cites Filipinos for keeping Catholic faith alive overseas

This was the message of Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Charles Brown during Wednesday’s Pontifical Mass celebrating the first baptism that took place in the country.
“So the faith of Christianity was transported in this part of Asia by Europeans and now it is being re-transported to Europe and other places around the world by Filipinos. What do we see in this? We see the universality of the Catholic faith,” said Brown.
Brown said Filipinos have kept the Catholic faith alive even in foreign places.
“What we celebrate with hearts with joy is the fact that in these five centuries, the Catholic faith has entered deeply into the Filipino culture and has produced a distinctively Filipino expression of the unchanging and universal truth of Catholic faith,” Brown said. ....

CEBU celebrated the 500th anniversary of the First Catholic baptism in the country by doing the same sacrament of baptism on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at the grounds of Plaza Sugbo in Cebu City.
