Council says pandemic worsened trafficking of vulnerable groups

Council says pandemic worsened trafficking of vulnerable groups By NICOLE-ANNE C. LAGRIMAS, GMA News Published December 17, 2020 6:18pm The Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) on Thursday said the COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the vulnerability of groups already prone to being victimized, with the venue for trafficking increasingly shifting to online spaces. During the 6th Manila International Dialogue on Human Trafficking, Justice Undersecretary Emmeline Aglipay-Villar said children, seafarers and fisherfolks, and household helpers and overseas Filipino workers have been seriously impacted by the pandemic and the resulting lockdowns. In May, the Department of Justice said it saw a 264.63% increase in reports of online sexual exploitation of children, receiving over 270,000 reports in a two-month period coinciding the start of strict stay-at-home measures in the Philippines.

Guevarra: pandemic showed tech is the future in fight vs trafficking

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra (TOTO LOZANO / PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) “As 2020 comes to a close, we are gaining a better understanding of what a global response to trafficking will look like in this decade and beyond,” he said in his speech during the annual Manila International Dialogue Against Human Trafficking that is being held virtually for the first time this year due to the ongoing pandemic caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).   Guevarra pointed out “there is a realization and consensus among stakeholders that developments in technology that have spawned new ways of committing trafficking can also be harnessed and utilized to respond to trafficking.”
