The natural gas storage report from the EIA for the week ending January 15th indicated that the amount of natural gas held in underground storage in the US fell by 187 billion cubic feet to 3,009 billion cubic feet by the end of the week, which left our gas supplies just 36 billion cubic feet, or 1.2% higher than the 3,045 billion cubic feet that were in storage on January 15th of last year, but still 198 billion cubic feet, or 7.0% above the five-year average of 2,811 billion cubic feet of natural gas that have been in storage as of the 15th of January in recent years..the 187 billion cubic feet that were drawn out of US natural gas storage this week was 10 billion cubic feet more than the average forecast of a 177 billion cubic foot withdrawal from an S&P Global Platts survey of analysts, and way more than the 97 billion cubic foot withdrawal from natural gas storage seen during the corresponding week of a year earlier, as well as more than the average withdrawal of 167 billion ....

University of Pittsburgh receives contract to study health effects of fracking


The University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health will receive a $2.5 million contract from the state of Pennsylvania to study the health effects of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.
“Pennsylvania is a healthy, vibrant place for all who call it home,” Gov. Tom Wolf said Tuesday. “We look forward to the invaluable research that will be done by the University of Pittsburgh and the information it will provide for the commonwealth.”
In recent years, dozens of cases of Ewing sarcoma, a rare bone cancer, and other childhood and young adult cancers have been identified in Washington, Greene, Fayette and Westmoreland counties, where shale gas sites are operating. ....

State Gives $2.5 Million To Pitt To Study Health Impacts Of Fracking

The Wolf Administration is giving $2.5 million to the University of Pittsburgh to study possible health impacts from fracking.
Communities in southwestern Pennsylvania have been calling for the state to investigate for more than a year.
The money will fund two observational epidemiological studies to be finished within two years. One will look at the possible relationship between fracking and childhood cancers in southwestern Pennsylvania. The other aims to replicate past studies on several health impacts, such as asthma. Pitt plans to publish quarterly updates.
Dozens of children and young adults have been diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma and other forms of cancer in Washington, Greene, Fayette, and Westmoreland counties, outside Pittsburgh, where energy companies have drilled more than 3,500 wells since 2008. The cases were first reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. ....

The University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health received a $2.5 million state contract to study known or suspected health complications related to fracking.
Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration will partner with University of Pittsburgh researchers to further study the possible health consequences of hydraulic fracturing in Pennsylvania. 
Wolf on Tuesday said the school’s Graduate School of Public Health received a $2.5 million contract to conduct two observational studies on known or suspected health effects of fracking. 
One study, led by Dr. Evelyn Talbott, a Pitt epidemiology professor and director of the Environmental Epidemiology section, will investigate the relationship between fracking and childhood cancers in southwestern Pennsylvania. For more than a decade, responsible natural gas development has been a winner for workers particularly skilled trades men and women families, and the health of our environment. Not to mention the benefits for Pennsylvania consumers as well. State residents heat their homes, water, cook food, and dry clothes without interruption and with an average savings of at least $1,100 a year, according to data from the state Public Utilities Commission. ....
