(Town of Yarmouth photo) On this day in 1761, the landing of the first settlers in Chebogue. Local historian David Sollows says the families of Sealed Landers, Ebenezer Ellis and Moses Perry arrived from New England. “More settlers followed that group. The first winters were brutal, and some decided the land was too inhospitable and left. There were a few families that remained, and more settlers arrived, and Yarmouth became what it is today.” Many descendants of those original families are still here today. Sollows says of course, the Mi’kmaq were here for thousands of years, and there were Acadian settlers in the 1600s up until 1759 in Chebogue and Chegoggin. ....
