Statement from the malaysia ministry of transport. on wednesday, investigators in france will try to determine if the debris is indeed part of that missing malaysia airlines flight. the piece that s called a flaperon arrived with a police escort to a lab near toulouse on saturday. the debris turned up this weekend on the shores of reunion, more than 2,000 miles away from the search zone. for more on the investigation, let s turn to our cnn correspondent david mulko live in hong kong at this hour. malaysia answering part of the question that this piece did belong to a boeing 777. how significant is that? that s right, george. this statement coming in just in the last hour. we heard a couple of days ago from the malaysians they said it was most certainly from a 777. now they re saying it s been officially identified. i ll read a bit of that statement here. they write, we know the flaperon has been officially identified as part of a boeing 777 ....
David, how soon could we see that preliminary report come out on whether this could be part of mh-370? george they re going to be doing this by the book, methodically with all of these international partners involved. down that list. french americans, chinese, malaysians as well. all working together. they do not want to make a mistake. remember this is the only thing they have. the only piece of physical evidence in more than 500 days. so the next couple of days are about getting together figuring out how they re going to proceed, and then on wednesday, that examination we expect to start. now, that is looking at the numbers, is this something that can tie this directly to mh-370 is there something potentially, a marking on it or something that corresponds to a maintenance record. they may even have to go so far as to take it apart and look inside and begin to try to get a closer understanding. it all just depends, george. the important thing here is ....
They re going to do this in a very structured methodical, and sensitive way. fundamentally, this is a human tragedy and the families are counting on them to get it right. david, this investigation happening just outside toulouse france. but it s calling in experts really from all over the world. that s right, george. there s something else that just came in the statement that i really wanted to let you know. the malaysians are now reaching out to other countries around reunion island so we could assume maybe the island of mauritius, madagascar down the southeastern coast of africa. they are saying basically they re asking for help they re looking for expert help in case more debris washes up on shore. one of the questions we ve been asking since this piece was uncovered on wednesday, should there be a second search? you have the underwater search off the coast of australia, but should there be a surface search for debris in and around reunion, maybe up and down that coast of afri ....
