Leadership, ethics and Practice Initiative here at the elliott school. The goal of this initiative sponsored by our dean is to give ofater profile to the topics leadership, ethics and their Practical Application in the education of our students graduate and undergraduate. This initiative brings practitioners to the school to learn about ethical and leadership challenges those practitioners face and how they address them. The same bringing scholars to the school to address these very same topics. I would also like to mention this morning that we are being filmed by cspan history. So we are fortunate to have these proceedings recorded. Young people both in and out of faced huge questions during the vietnam war. Would they take a stand. How would they put their values into practice. How would they come together to make a difference . An
Have two speakers this morning. We have Vernon Burton whos from clemson university, and we have Brooke Thomas who is from the university of california at irving. Both of them are stunningly important scholars in this world. Vernon burton is the judge matthew j. Perry distinguished chair of history and a professor of panafrican studies, sociology and anthropology and Computer Science at clemson university, which is to say hes mostly the entire university at this point. His i could read all of his distinguished awards and honors, and then he wouldnt have time to talk. I can only say that he has written a number of very important books. He has given major lectures at many institutions, most recently the annual lecture in southern history at the university of arkansas, and he his books have been in the book of the month club, the history book club, and other clubs. Contamination of workers, but a safety group said radiation inside the plant is at eight times the deadly level. So strong, after passing through a 3foot thick concrete wall, it can be measured a mile away. Gary shepherd reports from harrisburg. Reporter the accident occurred here at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant a dozen miles south of harrisburg. About 4 00 this morning, two water pumps that help cool reactor number two shut down. Officials say some 50 to 60,000 gallons of radioactive water escaped into the reactor building. And that the radioactivity penetrated the plants walls. Steam escaped into the atmosphere, and radiation was detected as far as a mile away. At least 50 workers and perhaps twice that number were at the plant when the accident occurred. A spokesman admitted some were exposed to radioactivity and may have been contaminated. He claimed no one was injured. All workers were given extensive checks with geiger counters as they left the plant. Reporters were
