Newly-released texts reveal extent of David Cameron's Greensill lobbying

Texts published by the Treasury Committee reveal the extent of David Cameron s lobbying for the now-collapsed firm Greensill Capital.
Between 5 March and 26 June 2020, the ex-PM and his staff sent ministers and officials 45 messages on behalf of the company, including to the chancellor.
The committee is examining Mr Cameron s role in trying to access government funding for the financial company.
Company founder Lex Greensill appeared at the committee earlier on Tuesday.
Answering questions from MPs, Mr Greensill said he bore complete responsibility for the failure of his company adding that he was desperately saddened by the job losses. ....

Two million jobs at risk under government loan scheme, Labour warns


TWO million jobs and almost three-quarters of a million small businesses are under threat under the government’s Covid-19 loans scheme, Labour warned yesterday.
The government is demanding repayment of £75 billion in loans made to help companies survive the pandemic lockdown  even if firms are struggling to get back to profitability.
Labour is calling for urgent changes to the repayment scheme, linking it to profitability, just as the repayment of student loans is linked to graduates’ earnings if and when they get jobs.
The alternative is tens of thousands of small firms becoming bankrupt with the loss of up to two million jobs, shadow chancellor Anneliese Dodds said. ....
