An apology and cash payment has been made by a public relations consultant to three public health experts who were victims of defamatory online attacks alleged to have been funded by money from Big Sugar and Big Tobacco.
The apology from Carrick Graham came in the opening hours of a defamation case at the High Court in Auckland in which evidence was to be produced showing he had taken money from clients in alcohol and food industries and paid former Whale Oil blogger Cameron Slater to attack public health researchers. ....

One of the final public battles over the Nicky Hager book Dirty Politics - a defamation trial over the defunct Whaleoil blog site - could be over within hours of its High Court opening today. Tim Murphy reports.
A long-running defamation case against former Whaleoil blogger Cameron Slater and PR man Carrick Graham, which stemmed from revelations in the
Dirty Politics book on paid hit jobs on the site attacking medical researchers, could possibly settle out of court within hours.
The lawsuit by academics Boyd Swinburn, Doug Sellman and Shane Bradbrook against Slater and Graham began in the High Court at Auckland on Wednesday morning. The court heard former National MP Katherine Rich and her Food and Grocery Council, who had previously been among those sued, had already reached a confidential settlement of the case against them - and Slater had decided simply to acce ....

The Southern Response court case now looks like paving the way for an overhaul of the justice system (video first published in September 2018).
Southern Response claimants underpaid for earthquake damage to their homes are suddenly faced with an abundance of choice, including a government offer that could head off a $300 million class action before it reaches court.
Earthquake Commission Minister David Clark announced on Monday a new cash package, to be offered to eligible policyholders who settled with the state-owned quake insurer before October 2014.
A second, competing class action case – the Canterbury Homeowners Class Action – was also launched on Monday. It is promising lower fees than the first, being run by Christchurch firm GCA Lawyers. ....
