Creating a “flex area” on Fourth Avenue could take away from downtown development, but Prince George City Council gave the concept the go-ahead Monday evening. In January, council asked administration to look at the possibility of designating the south side of Fourth Avenue between Vancouver and Winnipeg streets as a transitional flex area, allowing mixed use on the first storey and allowing up to four-storey buildings, with residential components included. Acting planning and development director Dan Milburn presented the report at Monday’s meeting. “The analysis has determined that the current policies would not support such a proposal,” the report concluded. “Furthermore, such a change has the potential to detract from downtown redevelopment,” by expanding commercial zoning into the area adjacent to downtown. ....
The new Prince George city council will include four incumbents and four new faces. Incumbents Brian Skakun, Don Bassermann, Murry Krause and Debora Munoz will be returning to council on Dec. 1. Joining them will be newcomers Shari Green, Garth Frizzell, Cameron Stolz and Dave Wilbur. “I want to thank the voters for coming out and voting and showing some support,” Skakun said. Skakun topped the polls with 9,650 votes. Green received 9,469 votes, Krause 8,418 votes, Munoz 8,033 votes, Frizzell 7,831 votes, Bassermann 7,694 votes, Stolz 7,329 votes and Wilbur received 7,254 votes. The new council was given a clear mandate to address the issues of crime reduction, improving air quality and diversifying the economy, Skakun said. ....
