thank you, please be seated. ladies and gentlemen, if we can once more express our appreciation to the joint armed forces color guard and the vocalist. [applause] it is a real pleasure today to have the opportunity to gather with so many law enforcement professionals, victim service professionals, business and other partners who work every day to combat human trafficking and to make our nation safer, especially for the most vulnerable among us. collaboration, the exchange of best practices and building returns is what this summit is all about. it is with great pleasure that i d like to introduce you the honorable rachel brand, the associate attorney general of the united states. the associate general serves as the third highest in the department of justice and overseas, among other things, many of the department s efforts to combat human trafficking. nominated by president trump and confirmed by the senate last year, miss brand had an a diverse legal career both in public s
already exposed to some kind of instability in their lives, and there was a time when law enforcement across the country would say that can t be a trafficking victim because she was pretty prosecuted. they are now saying let me look at the trafficker exploited the vulnerability. there were times when law enforcement across the country would say a jury in my district will not believe an undocumented woman who knowingly came to this country illegally and did some knowing she would prostitute because that s just an illegal prostitute that s not going to be a sympathetic jury. now we are seeing people say wait a minute, there is somebody behind this who facilitate that whole smuggling and prostitution scheme by manipulating this victim and knowing that she was not inclined to speak out and would not turn to authorities for help precisely because of those attitudes. that s what we are transferring when data time one case at a time when survivor anytime and i look for to continuing
ranking official in the the third highest ranking official in the this. efforts ton many of combat human trafficking. she was confirmed by the senate last year and she had a public public service before becoming an associate attorney general. during that president bush administration she served at the white house special assistant to the president and associate counsel to the president. from 2005 to 2007, she was nominated by president bush and confirmed that the senate as assistant attorney general for legal policy. served as the chief policy advisor to the attorney general, spearheaded the confirmations of the chief justice of the united states and justice samuel alito, alternating the administrations authorization of the patriot act. in 2012, president obama nominated her to serve as a member of the premises and civil liberties oversight board. she was confirmed and served board000 1210 2017 on the 2012-2017. outside of federal government, she has been an associate pro
international effort. con temporary to contrary to what mentioned earlier about the united states, outside this country, internationally, particularly in the large human trafficking concentrated areas, like the asia-pacific region, the focus needs to be more on restoration, rescue as well, but there seems to be perhaps lack of focused efforts in helping these individuals have a focus and purpose in life and bringing them back to a normal life, which is extremely critical, and so our focus in the international sector is from the restoration perspective. so is a come back to our work in the united states, and back to your question, david, maybe, take for example; i start with anthem s work, large healthcare company. we touch many communities, many institutions, many healthcare providers, so as an organization, we understand the unique opportunity we have in this space. when you look at the fight that we have against this evil, it starts with identification. it also includes r
