Orrville awaits impact of expected J.M. Smucker Co. layoffs

The J.M. Smucker Co. has remained a stalwart supporter of the community where Jerome Monroe Smucker founded his company nearly 125 years ago.
When you have a company that has always supported our schools and our downtown area like Smucker s has, they elevate the entire community, Mayor Dave Handwerk said in an email.
City officials and the local community are waiting to hear how expected layoffs at the company will affect those working at the Orrville campus.
Smucker confirmed Monday that it will lay off an unspecified number of North American employees as it adjusts to changing consumer habits during the age of coronavirus, according to a company statement. ....

WEST NORRITON, Pa. (CBS) Tens of thousands spent Christmas in the dark because of power outages in the Delaware Valley after a thunderous storm on Christmas Eve. West Norriton was one of the hardest-hit areas in the region.
Neighbors woke up to a massive tree ripped from its roots on Christmas morning, which is now toppled in the middle of the intersection. It snapped a power pole, which is still dangling from the wires. Neighbors are just grateful it wasn’t worse. ....

If a community, regional, or state government agency is seeking to partner with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) Chicago District to address a water resource problem within any of its seven mission areas, the Planning Branch is the first to be called.
“Usually the Corps is approached by a state or local government entity about a water resource problem that they have identified,” Dave Handwerk, chief of the Planning Branch’s Economic Formulation Section, said. “Sometimes this is a result of a storm event, sometimes through our outreach efforts. We frequently get approached by units of government that we have worked with in the past such as the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago or the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.” ....
