Jakim not involved in fake halal meat probe


PETALING JAYA: Investigations into the meat cartel are not being carried out by the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim), says its research division director Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee.
In a Facebook live broadcast entitled “Halal Certification SOP: What went Wrong?”, he noted that other government agencies were looking into the matter and called on the public to wait for their findings.
“The issue is now under the scrutiny of several government agencies and although Jakim is involved in the process of halal certification, we do not have the authority to expose the name of the brands involved or comment about the issue, ” he said. ....

Sabah: Major smuggling syndicate crippled

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hazani Ghazali said one of the syndicates, had been crippled last week.

He said the smuggling racket from Labuan had evolved gradually and become a serious issue.
“The syndicates smuggled cigarettes, alcoholic drinks and chicken wings from the duty-free-island here to the mainland.
“The cigarettes and alcoholic drinks smuggled to the mainland of Sabah are for the market in the rural areas. It is a matter of time before we get the masterminds,” he said at a press conference here today.
With the new government’s ruling coming into effect on Jan 1, 2021, cigarettes will be subjected to taxes at all duty-free islands or duty-free zones. ....
