獸醫師吳珈瑩表示，今年3月中、4月初，陸續有民眾從大溪、龍潭送來大赤鼯鼠，當時2隻都尚未斷奶，分別有骨折、尾巴受傷等狀況。因年紀太小，骨折的鼯鼠不進行手術，而是採用打石膏外固定方式。另隻尾巴受傷的則因感染嚴重，甚至有蠅蛆病，經過多次清創、敷藥後才改善。
雖然2鼠經過1個月治療已經改善，但是牠們被送到診所時，都年紀太小，尚未學會如何在野外生存，因此吳珈瑩等人決定在診所清出空間，設立仿野外籠舍，布置樹幹、樹枝，還為了教鼯鼠認識野外植物，還在診所臉書向民眾募集樹葉、野果等。因網友太過踴躍，冰箱一度塞爆。
鼯鼠經過訓練，從送來時僅200公克，準備野放時已經重達6、700公克，且可以處理核桃、栗子等硬殼食物。加上吳珈瑩評估，2鼠相當健康，運動能力良好，才決定送到山區野放。
