Married for 50 years, Greenville couple share another milestone: Surviving COVID together

GREENVILLE Crystal and Darryl Dutch have shared so many milestones together: marriage, children, birthdays and anniversaries.
Next month, they will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
Now they share another, less propitious event, COVID-19.
That milestone has a happy ending, however. The Greenville couple, both 72, left Lifespan’s field hospital together on Tuesday, tired but relieved to be home for the holidays. ....

Happy Christmas Eve, and welcome to This Just In. I m Mike McDermott, managing editor of The Providence Journal. Normally at this time on Dec. 24 I d be getting ready to host a big family party, and I m sad about all the people I won t be seeing. But I m going to make the most out of this Christmas with my beautiful wife and children.
Unless the power goes out, in which case I ll really lose my mind.
My Christmas wish is that the vaccines that are already being deployed, and those that are still working their way toward approval, will allow us to spend time doing what we enjoy doing, with the people we love even the ones we just like. That s why I enjoyed this Christmas Eve poem from EMT ....

Home for the holidays: Couple of 50 years survives COVID together

“It feels good,” Crystal said Thursday. “We’re home and we’re together.”
Their symptoms, shortness of breath and feeling tired, began three weeks ago. When their tests for COVID came back positive, they weren’t surprised.
“We kept saying, ‘We got COVD. We got COVID,” Crystal said. Darryl is still on oxygen and isn’t up to talking much yet.
On Dec. 18, Darryl’s oxygen levels dropped dangerously low. Crystal could see he was having trouble breathing.
Their daughter, Jennifer Dutch, who lives in Scituate, could tell from their voices that they were getting weaker. Their doctors had told her to monitor their oxygen with a special device, and once her father’s oxygen dipped, she was on her way over. ....
