Haskell Faculty Senate gives no-confidence vote for school president

Faculty at Haskell Indian Nations University have formally expressed their displeasure with the school’s president, who is also facing criticism from a national campus free speech organization that says his administration violated the First Amendment rights of students and staff.
On April 1, the Haskell Faculty Senate delivered a unanimous vote of no confidence against university president Ronald Graham, The Indian Leader reported.
The resolution says Graham’s one-year tenure has been marked by a disregard for academic freedom and free speech, and that he undercut Faculty Senate influence on academic matters.
Graham issued a “non-negotiable” memo early this month directing staff and faculty to voice their criticisms of the school, their peers and his administration internally through the university’s chain of command. He said any detractors who criticize the school publicly will face consequences. ....

Free speech groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, as well as a number of organizations focused on religious liberty, had filed briefs supporting the students case. ....

In 8-1 ruling, Supreme Court allows students' free speech zone lawsuit to proceed

In 8-1 ruling, Supreme Court allows students’ free speech zone lawsuit to proceed
Today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued its ruling in
Uzuegbunam v. Preczewski, holding that former Georgia Gwinnett College student Chike Uzuegbunam’s First Amendment lawsuit against his alma mater was not rendered moot after the institution changed its free speech zone policy. The Court held that Uzuegbunam’s remaining claim for nominal damages would provide sufficient redress for his alleged harm to give him standing to continue the suit.
The Court’s decision is welcome news for students seeking to vindicate their constitutional rights via litigation. FIRE had argued in favor of this result in a series of four ....
