MPs reject raising minimum alcohol package to 750ml
Wednesday March 03 2021
By JOHN MUTUA
Summary
Consumers have won relief after Parliament rejected a proposal to raise the minimum volume of alcohol in a bottle to 750 millilitres, a change that could have substantially increased the prices of the beverage.
Wundanyi MP Danson Mwakuwona had sought to amend the 2010 law by limiting the packaging of alcoholic products in containers of a minimum of 750 millilitres from the current 250 millilitres, to curb consumption.
The National Assembly’s Administration and National Security Committee, however, disallowed the proposed changes saying there were sufficient existing laws to guard against alcohol consumption among the youth. ....

Claims of corruption have once again rocked the National Assembly as MPs laid bare concerns of illegal benefits extended to those in perceived lucrative committees in efforts to buy influence.
On Thursday, some MPs cried foul that they are being judged harshly in their respective constituencies as their colleagues enjoyed extra benefits for serving in powerful committees.
The conduct of members of the Budget and Appropriations Committee came to the fore when colleagues raised integrity questions and called for its reconstitution.
National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi was forced to preside over heated debate on a motion by Majority Leader Amos Kimunya amidst claims of rent seeking and receiving illegal incentives from line ministries. ....

Kenya beer association slams proposed ban of quarts

NAIROBI,
(CAJ News) – KENYA’S Alcohol Beverage Association (ABAK) has denounced a bill that could limit the packaging of alcoholic products in containers of 750 millilitres (quart) or more.
Member of Parliament (MP) Danson Mwakuwona has made the proposal, which seeks to amend the Alcohol Drinks Control Act of 2010.
The private member’s bill is guided by the rationale that this would reduce the misuse of alcohol and curb underage drinking.
Mwakuwona’s bill also proposes that consumers be forced to pay a cash deposit whenever they intend to purchase alcoholic drinks packed in glass containers.
ABAK slammed the proposals.
“We believe this is an outrageous, retrogressive proposal that has no place in our developing economy today and we are opposed to the proposals in the Bill,” Gordon Mutugi, ABAK chairman, said. ....
